E3 2010 - Portal 2

This year’s E3 revealed some pretty impressive stuff that is to be unleashed into the world of gaming.  I think anyone that is really into gaming and technology will agree that Microsoft’s Project Natal, revealed to be named Kinect for release, was one of the most impressive pieces of kit to be shown and if nothing else the most technologically advanced.

Along with Kinect, Microsoft also unveiled their, smaller more stylish Xbox 360 with a 250 GB hard drive and built in N Wireless for the same retail price as the current Xbox 360 Elite.

As for the games that were shown, there were some titles that will be well anticipated as it gets closer to their release dates, including; Driver: San Francisco, Assassins Creed: Brotherhood, Gears of War 3 and for some of the more retro gamers out there, Nintendo’s GoldenEye 007 originally for Nintendo 64 remade for the Wii. But anyone that has ever played and enjoyed Half-Life and Half-Life 2, like myself, will have almost certainly played Valve’s Portal, the game in which the player must reach one side of a level to another using 2 gateways created using the only weapon given in the game.

So Valve’s big announcement an E3 was not, as a fair number of people had believe, Half-life: Episode 3 but in fact an equally appreciated Portal 2.
Portal 2 clearly uses an updated version of the Sources engine, the game engine used for all of valve’s games.
It has a huge amount of additions to games physics are present in Portal 2.  Here is a list.

·         The Excursion Funnel – The Excursion Funnel is a funnel of what is describe in the Demo videos are “Liquid Asbestos”, not the safest sounding thing in the world.  But in game they can be piped through portals and objects can be transported along them, from Cubes and turrets to yourself.

·         Aerial Faith Plate – Aerial Faith Plates are catapulting platforms and when contact is made between them and any object they bolt upwards and cause the object to completely change its course and catapult in the direction the platform pushes it.  As with The Excursion Funnel, effected objects include Cubes, the Character and most likely any other object that can be picked up.

·         Thermal Discouragement Beams – These Beams are basically lasers that can be diverted using specially designed cubes that contain what appears to be a form of mirror.  The beam can pass through portals and used to destroy objects such as turrets, this looks especially fun as they explode shortly after bursting into flames.

·         Pneumatic Diversity Vent – The vents are very similar to the pipes that dispense Cubes in the first Portal, with the exception that instead of dispensing, they do the complete opposite and suck objects up and along the tube.  The demo videos show the force from the pipe sucking up a turret and even panels off the walls, the force can even be transferred through portals.

·         Repulsion Gel – Repulsion Gel is what appears to be a rather viscous, blue liquid that does exactly as the name suggest, Repulses.  When it makes contact with the ground it layers into a puddle and the player can then walk onto it to be propelled in a rather upwards motion.  As with all the above, this can be funnelled through portals, but only whilst in it “Blob” form, not once it has become a puddle.

·         Propulsion gel – Just like the Repulsion Gel this element lives up to its name quite nicely.  Unlike the Repulsion Gel, it doesn’t come in singles blobs but rather a flow of smaller, randomly shaped, orange blobs that create a layer of orange slime the player can run along and be “Propelled” forwards on.

These are just the elements of Portal 2 that have been shown so far.  Will there be more?  And will they be just as exciting?  I hope so, and I’m sure you do too.
All in All, Portal 2 is set to be one of the biggest games of 2011 and will be well anticipated by the gaming community.  Available on PC, Xbox 360 and PS3, it will certainly have a wide scope of gamers to interest.

The World

The world is an interesting place, one minute things are going fine and then the next.  BOOOOM!  Everything goes completely the opposite direction.

Seriously, what the hell is anyone supposed to do in a world where everything changes so suddenly.

Portal 2

So Vavle announced Portal 2 at E3, maybe not as big as Half Life Episode 3 but still pretty damn good.

It would appear, by the videos, that they have updated the source engine massively, as it now contains flowing liquids and air flows that have an effect on objects, and they are only what they put into the previews, so who knows what other wonderful things Valve have in store for Portal 2.

Portal 2 is coming 2011 and will be available on PS3, Xbox 360, Mac and PC(of course).

Apple. Apple. Apple. Apple...

I Just Dont Understand Their Thinking Sometimes.
They Bring Out A Brilliant Product. They Then Try To Improve The Product By Adding Extra Features. And It Just Isnt Half As Good As The First Product.

Take The iPod Touch. As An Portable Media Player It Works Great, Its Very Innovative And There Isnt Much Like It On The Market Currently. They Then Take An Already Brilliant Product And Add Phone Capabilities Onto It. Now Introducing A Media Player Into The Mobile Phone Market Is A Pretty Mean Feat. But If You Are To Try To Do This, You Have To Succeed. I Feel That They Haven't.

The Same Goes With The Mac Book Air. As Brilliantly Innovative Product In Its Amazingly Small Size And Weight. They Take This Popular Product And Remove The Bottom Half And Add A Touch Screen. And Then BAM. The iPad Hits The Market. Its Almost A Mutant Hybrid Of A Macbook Air And iPod Touch. Which Are Both Great Products. With Its Overly Large Size Meaning That You Can Barely Call It Portable. The Advert Saying "The iPad Is Thin. The iPad Is Beautiful" . This Is Just Not True. The Macbook Air Is Thin And Beautiful. The iPod Touch Is Thin And Beautiful. The iPad Is Just A Freakishly Large Mix Of Two Successful Products That I Cant See Being A Success Itself.

So Go Out And Buy A Macbook Air Or A iPod Touch. But Think Twice Before Spending A Large Sum Of Money On An iPad Or iPhone. Things Might Not Be So "Beautiful" If You Do...

iPhone 4

On the left you can see the next iPhone from Apple, the iPhone 4.

I'm not going to lie, it looks pretty impressive, but looks aren't everything.  As with any piece of technology, unless it does what it is supposed to do and does it right, it doesn't matter if it's made of gold, it won't be any use to anyone.  (Except maybe Gold Smith or Jeweller).

So, on the 24th of June when the phone is released, what will be the defining features that decide the success or failure of the iPhone 4.
With very many people I know that had an opinion of the previous iPhone, size always seemed to be an issue, apparently it is too big.  Well, all the people out there that dislike the size of the iPhone you will be happy to know that Apple have decreased the height on the iPhone 4 by a massive 0.3 millimetres, now you'll have room in your pocket for you keys too.

The camera on this piece of kit is, in my opinion, pretty impressive.  The reverse camera has the ability to record High Definition videos in up to 720p, now as someone that enjoys the clarity of HD films and gaming, I wouldn't turn that down.
It's ability to take still pictures isn't quite as impressive at only 5 mega pixels, but with the level of video quality it can produce, I am willing to turn a blind eye at that.

This version of the iPhone will support N level wireless networks, so you can browse the net at home with a wireless connection speed of up to 300 Mbps.
And while you are browsing, you will notice how visually sharp the text on the screen is, with the new Retina Display, which Apple state gives the iPhone 4 "The sharpest, most vibrant, highest-resolution phone screen ever".   This new addition keeps text, images and movies at the same quality no matter how you look at the screen or how much or little you are zoomed in.  They have managed this by making each pixel only 78 micrometres wide, and the 3.5 inch screen on the iPhone 4 has 4 times more pixels than the previous iPhone's 3.5 inch screen.
And now, just incase you happen to drop the iPhone 4 out of an aeroplane, you can do so with out the slightest worry of the screen cracking as the screen is made from a highly strengthened  glass, the same as that used in Helicopters and on trains.

With all these added extras, the power consumption will be rather large, won't it?   No!  Inface talk time, audio time and browsing time have all increased on the iPhone 4.
This table should explain it.

Talk Time 2G Talk Time 3G Browse Time 3G Browse Time Wifi Adio Playback Time
iPhone 3GS 12 Hours 5 hours 5 hours 9 Hours 30 hours
iPhone 4 14 hours 7 Hours 6 Hours 10 Hours 40 Hours

And the best part, you can purchase a "bumper" (A rubber mould to go around the edge of the iPhone) that comes in 6 different colours, white, black, blue, green, orange or pink.

It's amazing how much of my information is spread across the internet, if I do a google search of either of the user names that I use frequently, 04mdavit and davman91 I get a suprising amount of results.

Name Results
04mdavitt 238*
Davman91 316*

Now if we search for my good friend and blog co-author's username, pengwaano, we get 616* results. All I have to say to that is, "Jacob, you use Twitter too much, because that's where most of the results are coming from"

A scene from Scrubs

One of my favourite Dr Cox rants from Scrubs.

Dr Cox - "No"

J.D. - "You Need to hire a few more nurses"

Dr Cox - "Look Tammy, we don't have the money . If you wanna go out and raise the cash yourself, feel free, maybe you could sell your eggs to a fertility clinic or sell that beard of yours to the ridiculous museum.

Better yet, y'could make a list of all the people that you drive insane and tell them that for a nominal fee you'll never speak to them again, you of course offer them a monthly subscription at a reduced rate, just to reel them in and then after a while of you NOT talking to them people will forget just how annoying you are and they'll let their subscription run out and BANG! That's when you show up at their house and you drive 'em insane all over again, by speaking to them. And here's the kicker, while everyone's trying to resubscribe, you lay it on 'em that the price is now quadrupled.

Now I'm predicting, and this is a low end guesstimate.

You're looking at about $100 Million a quarter, easy, you give the hospital hundred thou, y'hire a few nurses. BUT until then you go tell Carla, it ain't happening."

J.D. - "Wow! That was super fun..."

Dr Cox - "GET OUT!"
